Planting Tips

• Continue deadheading flowers.
• Fertilize roses in early June and mid-July to encourage next surge of blooms.
• Stake fast-growing plants.
• Apply fertilizer on cool-season grasses in June and again in August, and on warm-season grasses in June, July, and August.
• Begin dividing irises as they become dormant and continue through early September.
• Prune peppers and vining tomatoes lightly to encourage a fall crop.
• Turn compost pile weekly and water; add lawn clippings, dead garden matter, weeds that haven't gone to seed and kitchen fruit and vegetable waste.
• Replace mulch where it has thinned, using at least 3 inches around plants.
• Look for aphids and spider mites and wash them off with a water hose.
• Spray ponderosa , piñon and mugo pines for pine tip moth during the first full week of July if you didn't spray in early May, and treat anytime during the summer to prevent bark beetle.
